               K Street, Chapter 21

Monday, 9:24 PM: If It Feels Good

Jeff was definitely feeling the buzz of two tall ales on an empty stomach. Just as that occurred to him a wide waitress with a huge tray of food pushed through the doors setting it in the center of the round table, a moment later a young lady in red pigtails came in with a tray of plates and silverware with four more tall glasses of Guinness.
Each reached for a glass. Arnie toasted, “Cheers everyone, especially cheers to Jeff for another great performance!” He clinked Jeff’s glass. “And to the General who will make everything happen,” the General cheerfully raised his glass in a clink to Arnie’s glass, after another sip there was a flurry of food moving from the center of the table to plates, not a word was said for five minutes.
The General turned to Jeff with a Guinness mustache, “So Jeff, where are you from, tell me about you, do you have a family?”
Jeff went on to tell him the statistics skipping the divorce part, the General shared that his kids were grown, that he had six grandchildren.
“You must be very proud,” the General nodded between bites. Finally Jeff got to learn a little about Arnie, about his wife and his two teen-aged daughters, one graduating high school this year, the other only a year behind. Jeff guessed Arnie to be in his late fifties so that meant he was a late starter in the family department just like he had heard about these FBI guys starting families.
Soon their eating slowed, finally Jeff pushed himself back a little from the table. “God that was good!” amid smacking sounds of agreement all around.
Soon hands were shook, everyone stepping to the door when Arnie turned to Jeff. “Hey, Jeff, let me see your phone.” Jeff looked quizzically at Arnie, he reached into his inside coat pocket producing the Nokia phone. Arnie took it pushing some buttons, handing it back to Jeff. “I know that you have Nancy’s numbers, but I wanted to make sure you have mine just in case.” Jeff nodded, they left the small room following Nancy and the General toward the front door.
A few minutes later Jeff was back in the Blue Mustang heading to the Crown Plaza. They turned onto K Street, soon passing along the strip clubs. It was definitely much quieter on a Monday night compared to what Jeff had seen on Friday night. He felt a shiver at the memory of being shot at that night.
A few minutes later they were pulling up to the hotel. Jeff turned to Nancy, “So can you come up?”
She shook her head, “I know I promised, but I haven’t seen Shawn since Saturday night. I promised that I would go home.” She leaned over seeing his mild pout, “Sorry, but I’ve got to go play house,” she leaned to kiss him quickly on the lips. “Tomorrow night, I promise.”
He felt so exhausted that he couldn’t argue. “Okay, tomorrow night,” he leaned to kiss her again, opening the door, climbing out. He saw Ted in his black Caprice behind them. Ted motioned to the hotel door, pulled his car around Nancy’s to go park. Jeff leaned down, waved to Nancy through the window, turning to go into the hotel as she pulled away.
Jeff walked into the lobby standing away from the doors. A moment later Ted walked in.
“Did you get to eat tonight?” Jeff asked Ted.
     “No, not really.”
Jeff looked around seeing the hostess at the restaurant hooking the line across the entry showing that it was closed. He pointed to the bar, “They probably serve food in the bar, and I could use another beer.” Ted nodded, they walked into the bar.
There were only a few people in the bar. Ted scanned the room, “We can sit at the bar together, but we have to sit in that corner to have a view of the room, do you mind?”
“No, sure,” they walked to the far left side of the bar, Ted circling around the bar sitting down facing the entry. Jeff sat on his right with his back to the door figuring that Ted would be watching his back anyway.
A minute later Jeff ordered a beer, Ted ordered food.
Ted turned to Jeff, “So you know that I’m not supposed to ask about the case, but I am curious about something.”
Jeff took a sip of his Sam Adams, “Sure, what?”
     “All those women last night.”
“Yeah, it was pretty wild, huh?”
“Does that always happen to you?”
Jeff looked up reflectively which Ted took as counting. “Yeah, I guess it does.”
     “I mean, don’t get me wrong, you’re a good-looking man and all.”
Jeff laughed, “You know, Ted, I had a friend, a really attractive female friend that I had known for a long time, had sex a couple times, but mostly we were friends. I remember once her telling me that I am handsome, but not scary handsome.” They both laughed. “At first I was a little put off, but I realized that this woman spent a lifetime hunting scary-handsome men only to end up with a not-so-scary handsome husband, actually not a good looking man at all. If she thought I was handsome at all, that was good enough for me.”
“So you think because you are a not-so-scary handsome man that all these women flock to you?”
Jeff laughed, “I don’t know about flock, but yeah, because I guess I’m a half-way decent looking man that is approachable.”
“So approachable is the key,” Ted said slowly, as though this was some kind of revelation to him. Jeff smiled looking that this scary-handsome man in front of him with his wide shoulders, athletic build, his sculpted face.
“Look, I don’t know.” Jeff shook his head in mock sadness, “Sometimes it’s a pain in the ass. Like last night, you remember that ugly woman at the bar?” Ted nodded. “She assumed that I wanted to have sex with her. That ugly thing! So maybe approachable is not such a good thing!” they both laughed again.
“Yeah, but your wife is definitely an eye-full, and that other one that came after her, Jesus, she gave me a hard-on! And then to get to see her naked? Sheesh! Let me tell you, when I was standing there…” he smiled distant.
“It’s not all that…I don’t know…things are a little complicated right now. Yeah, I’ve got hot-and-cold-running women―okay, well maybe just hot―I mean what man wouldn’t like that, right? But there are two relationships that I really care about that are in total conflict with each other. And…well…I have feelings for that Kathy woman―you know, the one you saw naked―even though I don’t even know her. There’s just something there, something about her really special, I can feel it. Too bad about what happened last night. But yeah…women…” he took a long thoughtful drink.
“Agent White is one of them, huh?”
“Oh god, you know? How do you know? Will she get in trouble?”
“Possible if you go by the rule book, but this kind of thing happens all the time, as long as she doesn’t lose judgment, as long as it doesn’t affect her job performance, or create problems in your life then nobody cares.”
Jeff looked away from Ted, he felt a surge in his eyes thinking of just how much Agent White’s―Nancy’s―behavior, her existence has affected his life. He reached down for a bar napkin pretending to blow his nose while turning to wipe his eyes.
Suddenly he recognized a face at the other end of the bar.
     Oh Jesus, it’s Kathy!
Just as he started to turn away he saw the recognition in her face, her body’s startled jerk.
What the hell is she doing here?
He turned quickly back to Ted who had just taken a big bite of chicken. “Listen, I don’t suppose that I can go up to my room alone, can I?”
“I’d rather you didn’t,” Ted said with his mouth half-full.
Thinking quickly, Jeff put on the best frown he could, “It’s just that I really have to pee.”
“Then I need to follow you into the men’s room.”
“How about you follow me up to my room instead? You can come back down and finish your dinner.”
“No, sorry. Can’t. Can’t let you out of my sight. Not after what happened on Saturday. I should have known better, I won’t make that mistake again.”
Jeff looked back toward Kathy who was staring at him. “Then do you mind if I go talk to that lady over there?”
“I’d rather she comes over here.”
“Can I go talk to her to see if she wants to do that?”
     Ted nodded taking another bite.
“You know who she is, right?”
     Ted nodded, “The naked one.”
“Yeah, right, the naked one,” he glanced at her trying to signal if it would be okay if he comes over there, she seemed to sign back that would that would work. “All right, I’ll see if she wants to come over here.”
Jeff got up, taking his beer glass walking along the bar toward Kathy, “Hi,” he said softly, “can I sit down?”
She didn’t answer glancing down at the chair next to her.
He sat down, looked down the bar at Ted watching them, he nodded to Ted who gave a small nod back.
Jeff turned to Kathy, “Listen, I owe you a huge apology for last night.” The bartender walked up. Jeff asked to get another beer pointing to Kathy’s glass, “And another for her.”
“So what are you doing here, why aren’t you at the Hilton?” he asked.
     “You won’t believe it.”
     “Try me.”
“I was trying to get away from you,” she frowned.
Jeff laughed, “Well you’re sure not very good at that!”
Kathy laughed, he could see her instantly calm down, she laid her hand on his arm, “No, you are evidently very hard to get away from!” they both laughed.
“So why did you pick here? There are a jillion hotels in DC.”
“Somebody told me that there are a lot of good-looking men who stay here.”
Jeff did a little sideways model pose with a big smile, “You mean like this good-looking man?”
She motioned toward Ted, “No, like that good looking man.” Jeff turned to glance at Ted, turned back to her with a fake hurt expression, they both laughed again.
“Listen, I really owe you an explanation for last night. But most of all, I am sooooo sorry for what happened. You must have felt humiliated and that’s the last thing I wanted.” She left her hand on his arm, the bartender walked up with two drinks. “It’s just…it’s just kind of…kind of complicated. I’m involved in a really bizarre situation―don’t ask because I won’t be able to tell you―them busting in on us like that was to do with this…this situation that I’m in.”
She took a long slurp of her drink. “That’s fine, this town is full of things people can’t talk about, but what was that with all the laughing. I mean, there I am, about to have sex with this really great guy―that would be you by the way―then all the sudden this woman and man storm into the room, next thing I know you guys are laughing your heads off while I’m laying there all naked. What the hell was that all about?”
“The woman…well, she and I…like I said, it’s complicated. We were involved in a case―I mean a situation―in Atlanta a couple years ago.” He suddenly realized that there would be nothing that could explain anything in this woman’s eyes. “Anyway, her coming into the room reminded both of us about something that happened in Atlanta.”
“You were having sex with another woman in Atlanta and she burst in on you like last night?”
Jeff smiled to himself realizing that there weren’t too many explanations for Nancy’s and his behavior last night. “Let’s just let it go at that, okay?” he picked up his beer glass.
She raised her glass clinking with his, “Okay, fair enough.”
Jeff raised his glass to his mouth draining his beer, she did the same with her drink, they ceremoniously clanked their empty glasses down on the bar in unison. He turned around to look at Ted who was motioning for them to come over by him, but Jeff turned away from him.
“Listen, I’m not sure you’d be interested, but if you ever want to try again, I would be very much into it. I’ll try to promise that nobody will come breaking in catching us in the act.”
She smiled warmly, “I’d like that, but not tonight. I’ve got to get up early tomorrow and still have some work to do to prepare. Can I get a rain check?”
He grinned, “Hey, that’s my line, isn’t that what I said to you on the phone the other night?”
“Yes, that’s where I got it from. So when are you heading out?”
“Friday morning, but that might change.”
“Okay,” she counted on her fingers, “so we have at least three nights, right? Want to try tomorrow night?”
     “Tomorrow night?”
She smiled, “Sure, that way if it feels good we can have two more nights!”
“Fair enough, hopefully I will pass muster tomorrow night!” they raised and clinked glasses.
“Yes, hopefully we’ll actually get to be alone!”
“Yes, here here!” they tinked glasses again.
She reached into her purse pulling out a pen grabbing a napkin from the pile in front of her, “Okay, so let’s try again,” she scribbled the number four-twelve, handed her pen and another napkin to Jeff who jotted neatly the number six-nineteen.
“There we go, it’s a date!” she smiled.
