Magic Town, Final Chapter
Tuesday,
12:14 PM: Parting
By the time they got into her car, it was past noon. They were soon on
their way down the familiar freeway heading to the Atlanta airport. As they neared the airport
Jeff said, “I thought I wasn’t supposed to go the airport.”
She glanced at him, “You’re not, at least not to the commercial side.”
She guided the car up a side road, was soon at a gate with a guard who let them
pass when she showed her badge. Soon they were pulling up to a hangar, she
steered to one side, stopping the car. “Have you ever been in a Cessna Citation?”
“No, but I hear they’re pretty cool.”
“Just you and me.” She smiled. “Is that okay?”
“Can’t I go alone? Why are you going?”
She opened her car door, swung out her legs smiling over her shoulder,
“Because I want to!”
Within twenty minutes Jeff was seated back in a cushy dark brown leather
seat having received the safety briefing from their flight attendant, a beer
was poured for him. Nancy
had a margarita on the rocks. In a few minutes Jeff saw downtown Atlanta to their right as the plane banked heading west
leaving Atlanta
behind them.
The conversations were light, Jeff could feel a pulling in his chest,
somehow thinking they could go find a back row in the plane and…
He was filled with regret that he should have found a way to stay a few more
days.
Somehow.
Instead, he knew that he needed to go home. He felt his heart tearing.
Tearing between this wonderful woman with the golden eyes and his life back in Seattle . Tearing like
those little Valentine hearts that he played with as a kid, but that he would
never dare to tear from a mortal fear of bad luck.
He watched out the window as they crossed the Mississippi
River continuing over long, long stretches of farm land.
She sat next to him holding his hand. He leaned his head back closing
his eyes.
“Hey, sleepy head, wake up.” Jeff jerked awake. “We’re almost there,
fifteen minutes maybe.”
“Oh my god, I slept the whole way?”
She nodded. “Not the whole way, you almost made it to Idaho . Well, Kansas at least!”
“Oh, Nancy ,
I am so sorry, you came all this way to watch me drool while I sleep?”
She reached out holding his hand. “I just wanted to be here with you. To
see you off.”
The captain asked them to prepare to land, in a few minutes the plane
was pulling up to a hangar next to a limo waiting on the tarmac.
As the plane came to a stop, Nancy
turned to Jeff. “I know I’m not supposed to say this.” She took a deep breath,
Jeff waited in anticipation. “But I’ll say it anyway.” She reached for his
hands holding them tight. “You are the most special man I have ever met. I’m
not just saying that because of this crazy weekend.” She tossed her head, her
hair flying around her shoulders. “It’s been so long since I felt like this, and
it is going to be so hard to watch you step off this plane.” Her eyes started
to well. “But you have given me hope. You have made me feel like this again,
maybe really for the first time, it has been so long that I had forgotten what
it feels like.”
“Nancy , oh my god, I could fall in love with
you a hundred times. This is tearing my heart in half, I can’t bear to walk
away from this, from you.” He turned away shaking his head slowly in deep
thought, looking back. “But that would be so unfair wouldn’t it? To you…to my
wife…yeah, you’re right…I just can’t do that.”
He turned away from her feeling tears coming to his eyes, before he
could help himself they trickled down his face. She pulled his face back toward
her, tears coursing down her cheeks. “Jesus,” she sighed, “what a couple of babies!”
they kissed deep and passionate, their hands clutched together between them.
She let go of his hands, taking a deep breath as she wiped her cheeks
with her fingers, “Well, mister Jeff, you’re home. We did the best we could to
make sure you got back to your family.” She looked out the window blankly, back
to him. “This may be the quickest limo ride you’ll ever have, but it is going
to drive you to gate 36 and you will go up the stairs to the jetway and mix in
with the crowd. Your luggage will be in baggage claim, and so now you,” her
eyes welled with tears again, “are free to…” her voice weakened sounding almost
squeaky, “…free to go.” She leaned over into one last long passionate kiss, she
abruptly stood up. “Now if you don’t mind, they’ve got to put fuel in this
thing, I have to be in DC by morning.”
Jeff stood up, she pulled him back down into his seat, “Wait, I forgot
something.” She reached into her purse pulling out an envelope. “I’m sorry, but
we’ve gotta do this.”
The envelope had a return address of FBI, Washington DC .
The envelope was not addressed. He pulled out a two-page stapled document
reading it silently. “This is a non-disclosure agreement.”
She nodded handing him a pen, “Just a formality. But you know you can’t
tell anybody anything about this. Nobody, not even your mother.”
Laughing he looked to the ceiling, “Like
anyone would believe me anyway!” They both laughed.
He scanned the document, scribbled his signature, dated it, deciding not
to ask for his own copy.
She took the pages sliding them back into the envelope setting it aside.
Reaching out taking his hands. “It’s so weird to be giving you back to your
family.” Tears came to her eyes as she looked down, “But…”
He looked into her wonderful golden eyes with the tiny black flecks as a
tear trickled down her cheek, he reached up to wipe it with his fingertips.
“Oh Nancy ,
you’re not going to make this easy, are you?”
She sat up straight, wiped her eyes with the backs of her hands, swiped
her cheek with her fingers. “Yes, you’re right, we’ve been through all this.
I’m sorry.” She looked deeply into his eyes, “You gave me something nobody can
ever take back from me.” She looked out the plane’s little portal window, back
at him. “I’ve said everything I can. You know how I feel. In my heart I know
that you love me, and that’s enough for me.” She looked deep into his eyes
barely whispering, “And you’ve taught me to love again.” She took a quick big
breath.
In a louder voice she declared, “And now it’s time to send you back to
your life!”
She stood quickly, turned walking half-crouched in the small plane toward
the door. He followed her out the door, down the stairs. Jeff saw the limo
twenty feet away. The driver got out coming around the car opening the back
door. Jeff started to walk toward the limo, turned around coming back to her as
he took her hands.
“Will I ever see you again?”
She gave him a quick peck on the lips, turning back to the plane
speaking over her shoulder with a big smile.
“Yep!”
